Statement from the Media Committee of Zakia Organization for Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection:
At our headquarters in Nouakchott, Zakia Organization for Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection, along with our partners from Greenpeace, hosted representatives from civil society. This meeting was part of a joint program aimed at promoting sustainable development and environmental protection. This meeting provided a valuable opportunity to meet with leading local actors, including serious civil society organizations, and a group of women fish processors who form a key pillar in the value chain of the fishing sector. Discussions were serious and in-depth, covering key issues related to preserving the marine environment, ensuring the sustainability of fish stocks, and supporting women processors in overcoming daily challenges, given their crucial role in the local economy and ensuring household food security. The Greenpeace delegation presented a technical presentation and practical guidance, serving as basic field training for local actors. This covered best practices in fish processing, waste reduction, maintaining product quality, and raising awareness of the dangers of pollution and the importance of community oversight of fishing activities. Zakia Organization presented a comprehensive overview of practical workshops aimed at civil society, inspired by Greenpeace’s global experiences and based on its international expertise. This embodies its role in advancing Mauritanian civil society and establishing a culture of development and environmental awareness, which will positively impact the nation. This meeting provided an open space for exchanging experiences and perspectives, and solidified the foundations of a genuine partnership between local actors and international organizations to establish a responsible environmental culture and enhance women’s leading role in protecting natural resources and ensuring food security.
